The East Selma Fish Pond will open for the first time Tuesday, giving everyone in Selma a relaxing place to enjoy a quiet, restful morning or afternoon while hooking a fish or two.

The pond, located on Plant Street, will be open on Tuesday’s from 7 a.m. to noon for senior citizens, or those who are at least 50-years-old. It will also be open to everyone on Thursday afternoons from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday mornings from 7 a.m. to noon.

“It is a 10-year old pond that services the Selma community and our senior citizens,” Reece said. “It gives people an opportunity to fish at no cost.”

Reece said the pond was restocked with 3,000 pounds of catfish and 400 pounds of tilapia in March, before the pond’s spring fishing period.

Selma Parks and Recreation Director Elton Reece said the pond is a great place to spend a leisurely day while telling a fish story or two with friends or family.

“For the older people, it takes them back to their youth when they used to fish,” Reece said. “It is a fun thing to do. It is great for recreational, just easy and quiet.”

There is a limit of five catfish per day, but there is no limit on the number of tilapia that can be caught. Considering the pond was restocked in the spring, Reece said the catfish should be decent size by now. ”

The pond will be open for the entire month of October and closes on Nov. 2.
