Selma residents hoping to find another perspective on life will have a chance to learn from an artist who prides herself on painting the world around her in a different manner than most.

Kellie Newsome will return to Selma to teach a five-hour class on Oct. 5 at the Selma Art Guild Gallery on Selma Ave, and Art Guild president Jo Pate said those who attend will certainly learn how to paint with a different perspective.

“She paints with the wildest color combinations you have ever seen,” Pate said. “She taught a portrait class here before — the portraits were all pink and orange and green, too — but they all turned out looking like the person they were painting.”

The upcoming workshop will focus on painting pictures of pets or animals the participant is fond of.

“Pupils are asked to bring in a photo of any animal they want, but it will not be painted like they are used to,” Pate said.

Newsome, who has been teaching painting for a decade, said that while the class will cover a wide range of topics — including sketching tips, basic paint application, unique color schemes, proportion study, color blending and building a balanced composition — she is sure to teach in a way that is accessible for people with either a lot, or no painting experience.

“This workshop will have a very simple approach to painting, and it won’t be formal like a lot of art classes,” Newsome said.

“I try to keep it loose, colorful and less intimidating, because I’ve found that allows my students to be more expressive,” Newsome said.

“My motto is to constantly inspire and improve, and I hope to inspire through my teaching,” Newsome said.

“Creating something by yourself is such an exciting and enjoyable experience, and I am hoping this class can just drive their passion,” Newsome said.

Those in attendance will receive a chair, table, easel, water basin, acrylic paints and an outline of all the necessary class information. Participants are asked to bring their own canvas or other surface to be painted.

Newsome will have brushes that can be used if a participant doesn’t bring their own.

Newsome said she would also be bringing paints and brushes to sell.

The class will take place from noon until 5 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 5 at the Selma Art Guild Gallery located at 508 Selma Ave.

The cost of the workshop is $75 per student.

To ensure each painter can have enough one-on-one time to learn from Newsome, a limit of 10 people can sign up for the class.
