The Selma Choral Society has invited the Selma community to lend their voices or merely their presence to the choir’s weekly rehearsals, which is preparation for their upcoming performance of “Messiah.”

The choir, which is comprised of residents that represent the various races, ages, and backgrounds of Selma, is holding open rehearsals in the choir loft of First Presbyterian Church Tuesday nights from 7:30 -9:30.

The public is welcome to participate in rehearsals and join the Selma Choral Society in their “Messiah” performance Sunday afternoon. There is no audition or registration necessary.

On Dec. 7, the choir will perform part two of Handel’s Oratorio “Messiah” at 3 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church.

Performing all three parts of the “Messiah” would take over three hours, said Gerald Anderson, the president of Selma Choral Society. Hence, why the group only takes on one portion a year.

The group will sing “Hallelujah Chorus” and “God Triumph,” among other selections.

He said the choir presents a quality, classical and baroque style of music that many should be able to appreciate.

Sarah Cater, who has been the organist for the past 38 years, said it’s a great opportunity for those who enjoy singing.

“If you love to sing and you have faith, it’s an opportunity to sing with a group that does,” Cater said. “We will help you learn the music. I think it’s a great thing to participate in.”d
