Anyone who is available Tuesday at 10 a.m. should go to Green Street and participate in the groundbreaking for Riverfront Park. This project is something of which all of us should be proud.

The Riverfront Park project is a reclamation of downtown. It speaks volumes to those who would detract from Selma. It holds with it the promise of downtown becoming a family-oriented site; a place for tourists to enjoy the best that is Selma.

The project will not see completion overnight. This is phase one — the construction of a concrete walkway, a 50-foot bridge and two overlooks for the Alabama River.

The river is so much a part of our lives and of the history of this area. It is fitting that the city construct a park to bring into focus that which has molded us into who we are and where we are going.

Combined with other planned projects, public and private, Selma should see new faces and eventually become a destination spot all year round for tourists, instead of during special events, such as the Bridge Crossing Jubilee, the re-enactment of the Battle of Selma and Market Days and the Tale-Tellin’.

We are fortunate to be here and now, seeing the changes that will make us better.
