PLANTERSVILLE — Dallas County High School power forward William Lee elected to delay the announcement of his college choice after waking up Friday morning not completely sure which college he wants to attend.

Lee, ranked by ESPN as the nation’s No. 65 recruit, was set to choose between Alabama, Georgia, UAB, Mississippi State and SMU Friday, but chose to delay his decision a little longer.

“It is probably like three schools, like three or four, that I’m thinking about,” Lee said when asked if he’d eliminated anyone.

However, Lee said he would rather not say which school or schools might have fallen behind a little bit on his list.

The star basketball player has always said that he wants to be close to home, but “not too close”. Now, he admits how close he wants to be is one of the biggest things he is struggling with right now.

“I really never thought this was going to be a big factor, but the distance away from home is a big factor,” Lee said. “I want to go to a school that is close to home, but not too close. I just want to go there and feel like a family, like I’m supposed to go there.”

When asked whether Alabama, the closest school on his list — about a 1.5 hour drive from Plantersville — was too close, Lee said no.

Nobody knows where Lee is going, but most agree that SMU is the wildcard in his top five. Coaching legend Larry Brown and the Mustangs have made a big push and surpassed Wichita State over a month ago to soar into Lee’s top five.

“I like SMU for some reason,” Lee said. “I could see myself living in Dallas is the big thing and I could see myself going to SMU.”

But, Lee also said he’s struggling with how far SMU is from home.

“It’s the distance about SMU. It is 14-hours away in a car and 2-hours on a plane,” Lee said. “I’m concerned of how I am going to get back and forth on holidays to come visit my family if I go to SMU.”

Lee said he felt like he might be rushing his decision, with the Hornets first high school game coming up next Friday night.

“I’ve got to keep looking at schools and stop rushing to make sure I make the right decision,” Lee said. “Then, sometimes I think I’m over thinking it.”

Although he isn’t sure, he is hoping to make his mind up on Monday, a school holiday because of Veteran’s Day. Lee is unsure when he will schedule another announcement.
