For four hours Tuesday, Selma will host a national television camera crew.

The Travel Channel will film parts of Selma’s historic downtown on Dec. 3 as a part of its Monumental Mysteries Series.

Selma Mayor George Evans said he is happy to see Selma getting some positive national attention.

“Our city has plenty of history during the civil rights period and it’s great that our history will be on national television,” he said. “Hopefully they can capture some of the important landmarks in our city.”

Optomen Productions, based in New York City, plans to film the the Edmund Pettus Bridge, the St. James Hotel, Martin Luther King Street, Broad Street and Riverfront Park, according to an application with Selma’s Office of Planning and Development.

According to the application, the footage of Selma will be used in “non-fiction, docu-series” segment on the civil rights marches of 1965.

The city charged Optomen Productions a permit fee of $72 for the four hours of filming.
