Christmas events postponed

Selma Mayor George Evans chose Thursday night to postpone the Christmas-tree-lighting and fireworks ceremonies due to inclement weather.
The Christmas parade will continue as planned — 10 a.m. on Saturday at the base of the Edmund Pettus Bridge.
The tree lighting ceremony was originally scheduled for 5:30 p.m. on Friday at Riverfront Park, but Evans said a rainy weather forecast forced him to move to parade back one week, to either Friday, Dec. 13 or Saturday, Dec. 14.
“The weather forecast showed an 80 percent chance of rain and I just don’t want to chance it,” he said. “I’m leaning more toward moving it to Friday of next week. I think we are going to chance it on the parade and continue as planned.”
In addition to weather, Evans said he wanted to make sure the atmosphere for the ceremonies is as enjoyable as possible.
“We spent that money on the fireworks and I just want to make sure people have the chance to enjoy it,” he said.
For more information on plans for the Christmas-tree lighting and fireworks ceremonies Evans said to call Selma City Hall at 874-2111.
