The 21st Century Youth Leadership Movement’s Winter Leadership Camp has been an annual staple in Selma for 25 years, but coordinator Jerria Martin has only held her current position for one month in advance of this year’s camp.

Needless to say, she’s been busy making contacts and preparing or the arrival of 60 high school students from around the state.

“I’ve been extremely busy trying to find ways to connect with the community,” Martin said. “Because that is what I really want the students to gain from this experience. I want them to understand what it takes to have strong communities.”

This year’s camp, which kicks off Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at the George Washington Carver Homes development, will feature the launch of a new activity, the Random Acts of Kindness program.

During the RAK program, the high school students will give away 100 educational toys to underprivileged children living in the GWC homes.

The event will also feature a prayer for the city, caroling and a performance by the Selma High School Marching Band Drumline.

In a press release last week, Martin said the RAK program would continue throughout the year.
