R.B. Hudson (14-4) used a suffocating defense to pull away from Tipton-Durant (7-7) in the second half of their 37-26 win Wednesday night at Selma High School,
The Bulldogs led 16-14 at halftime but pulled away in the third and fourth quarters behind Loveless Craig and Jordan Jackson, who combined to score over half the points for R. B. Hudson in the game.
“I think the difference in the game was that we settled down and started playing stronger defense,” R. B. Hudson head coach Derrick Randolph said. “We got a few transitional balls and layups. We tried to slow the game down a little.”
Tipton head coach Jovante Billinglsey said his team did not come out sharp in the second half.
“We came out of the locker room sluggish after the half,” Billingsley said. “We missed a lot of key, point blank buckets. We just came up short.”
Tipton led the game 12-6 early in the second quarter, but R. B. Hudson stormed back to score ten of the game’s next twelve points. After leading by six, the Tigers were outscored 31-14 the rest of the game.
Tipton made a final run at the end of the third quarter, closing to within 26-22 after Keshawn Arrington made a three-pointer, but that was as close as the Tigers would get the rest of the way.
Tipton was stuck on 22 points most of the fourth quarter and by the time the Tigers did score again the lead had ballooned to eleven.
Tarrance Williams and Katavious Olds led Tipton in scoring with 10 points each.
The R.B. Hudson seventh grade boys team also won, beating Tipton 20-17.
R.B. Hudson 35, Tipton 5 (girls)
R.B. Hudson’s Lady Bulldogs (15-2) cruised to a 35-5 victory over Tipton-Durant (1-11) Tuesday night at Selma High School.
“They did a good job at executing. I have a special group,” R. B. Hudson head coach Martina West said.
“I have been fortunate and blessed with a great group of girls like I have.”
The Lady Bulldogs held Tipton to just two made field goals in the game and at one point led 25-0 in the second quarter.
“The kids were excited to play at Selma High School in nice facilities,” West said. “I think it gave them an opportunity to see what it will be like to play over here next year.”
On the other side, Tipton coach Jovante Billingsley said his team should focus on working hard this offseason.
“I told them it is time to get right back in the gym after the Christmas break,” Billingsley said when asked what he told his team following the game. “Keep on pressing the fundamentals and keep working hard.”
