Children’s trunk show to support ArtsRevive

There was a time when every piece of clothing, for child and adult alike, was durable and delicate, and crafted with style in mind, rather than being mass-produced at the lowest cost possible.

Jennifer Atkins, co-owner of Peony Fine Children’s Clothing out of New Orleans, is bringing a collection of her company’s garments to Selma this week in hopes to show parents their children can still dress in the Southern style of old.

“There was nothing around for that style before we got into this,” Atkins said. “Everything is very Southern by nature. These pieces are designed to be heirloom pieces. They are designed to last generations and to be warn for two to three years.”

The Real Estate Gallery, located at 706 Broad St. in Selma, will host a trunk show for the Peony pieces from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesday.

Atkins said a portion of the revenue made during Tuesday’s show will be donated to ArtsRevive.

While her company was founded in July, Atkins said the response from the public has been incredible.

Atkins had already traveled to fashion shows in New York and Dallas, and orders have been placed from overseas.

“That southern charm is something truly everyone can embrace,” Atkins said. “And being so Southern and so charming it has a broad audience and is really enjoyed everywhere.“

The pieces, which are all manufactured in New Orleans, come in sizes that can be worn by children from infant to 14-years-old.

Tuesday’s trunk show will be the third out-of-state show for the company, and Atkins said there were several reason why coming to Selma made sense for the company.

“There is so much growth and culture right there in Selma,” Atkins said. “And my husband, Victor, is also from Selma, so we are very familiar with the city and the people there.”
