A Selma organization that supports and promotes locally made works of art is giving the community a chance to view art from all over the state during the month of March.

ArtsRevive is hosting their 12th annual Roots and Wings Art Exhibition March 8 to 31. From March 9-31, the organization will display submitted art from all over Alabama at the Carneal Building, located at 3 Church Street, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for the general public to view free of charge. March 8 is reserved for ArtsRevive members only.

“It recognizes and values the work that local artist do and what they contribute to Selma and to the economy,” ArtsRevive executive director Martha Lockett said. “It offers people here an opportunity to see really exceptional art work.”

Those interested in participating in the art exhibition have until Jan. 31 to submit their work. They accept photos, painting, pictures and more other pieces of artwork from Alabamians.

Lockett said that the event attracted the most participants it ever has last year, bringing in more than 130 pieces from 63 applicants.

She said she hopes that this year’s event will bring in a big crowd of applicants.

“We are hoping that the numbers will be consistent and maybe up a little more,” Lockett said.

Event chairperson Vicky Stoudenmire said that more and more Selma residents are submitting their art each year, exposing talent that several in the community weren’t aware of beforehand.

“A lot of people in Selma have not been exposed to things like that, and it gives them a chance to submit it,” Stoudenmire said. “It seems to me that since we have been doing this show, a lot more people have started crafting and drawing some kind of art.”
