Dear editor,

I am writing this open letter to Superintendent of Education Gerald Shirley.

I am sure your heart is heavy and saddened with the fact that our school system is being taken over by the state Board of Education, because the plan that you and your school board members approved did not have the opportunity to work.

Please do not take it personal, you have done a great job with our children, keep on striving for the children, “because you cannot raise grown adults.”

I have watched you for many, many days, weeks, months and years watching out for our children, as well as serving in many different capacities for them; in the hot sun, rain, sleet and snow, as well as when they are returned safely to the families after the school days in the evening time.

You are a great educator, well rounded with superb knowledge of the education system. I have enjoyed your many articles written in The Selma Times-Journal, your honesty and factual documents on education and where we need to go as the catalyst for our children in the 21st century.

You are a great man of valor and honor.

As superintendent of our school system, I am certain you are facing many challenges each and every day from staff members that are not committed to serving as a team member for the betterment of the school system. However, keep the faith, keep praying that the Lord will touch the hearts of those not willing to do the things that are right for our children.

God bless our children, protect them for the evil ones, that they may all receive a great quality education, even with the limited resources we have here in our community.

My last two children graduated in 1999 and 2000 from Selma High School, since then I have had three grandchildren complete their education at Selma High School and a great-grandchild attended Byrd Elementary and I currently have one grandchild in the district. I want all the children to receive a superb education here in Selma, so they can be that shining light wherever they choose to go. Education is the key to success.

Thank you Mr. Shirley for sharing your talents, skills and knowledge with us. I pray the Lord will continue to crown your head with wisdom and knowledge during these trying times.
