CAMDEN — Black Belt Treasures Cultural Arts Center has announced the schedule for their upcoming adult art classes and workshops, and there is sure to be something for everybody.
With a variety of classes covering topics like fused glass jewelry, abstract floral paintings in acrylic, hand quilting and pottery, AmeriCorp VISTA volunteer Jennifer Smith said it would be shocking if they all failed to attract a large crowd.
“We’ve had all of these options in the past, and most of the classes have been pretty well attended,” Smith said. “Some have filled up with in a few days. Personally, I’m really interested in taking in the jewelry classes, because I’ve never seen that process up close before.”
Smith said if public interest keeps growing, more painting classes could be added.
Kristen Law, art programs and marketing manager at BBTCAC, said she will be leading the art escape painting classes as well as the pottery sessions, both of which move at a pace the students desire.
“In past pottery classes we’ve made everything from clay jewelry to vases and pottery,” Law said. “People can make functional pieces like bowls and platters, or they can make a piece artistic. And in the painting classes we’ve done everything from beginner levels for fun on up to some very serious pieces. We can accommodate what people want to do and are interested in.”
Law said she makes a point to speak with each student before the classes begin to gauge what they would like to get out of the lessons.
Law is scheduled to lead the adult art escape painting courses from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on the fourth Friday of March and April. Her pottery class will be held at the same time on Friday, March 14 and Friday, April 18.
Instructor Linda Munoz will lead the fused glass jewelry class will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, May 23, Rebecca Koontz will give a abstract floral painting in acrylics from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday, March 13 and March 20.
Doris Mosley will lead hand quilting in Gee’s Bend style during sessions from 11:45 a.m. until 2:15 p.m. on Saturday, March 15 and Saturday, April 19, and Mary Margaret Pettway will teach a class from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the second Monday of March and April and the fourth Saturday of each month.
