While Dallas County High School has been celebrating its first basketball championship, the Hornets’ track and field team has been quietly at work.

Dallas County took advantage of Saturday’s weather by getting in a practice at Selma’s Memorial Stadium, which allowed the Hornets to get a taste of what a real meet might look like.

“These days are priceless because we have very limited equipment at the school,” Hornets’ track and field coach Robert Dolbare said. “We don’t have a track, we don’t have jump pits and we don’t have discus circles, so these days of being able to see what the actual event looks like are valuable.”

Of course, even practice at Memorial Stadium can’t show Dolbare everything he wants to see.

“Things are coming along nicely right now but we are just ready for a meet,” Dolbare said. “We just need a meet to see where we are at and get that measuring stick.”

Dolbare will get to see how his team stacks up very soon, because the Hornets will take part in their first meet Tuesday at Demopolis High School.

The Hornets have a good mix of veteran athletes and young track members, Dolbare said.

This is the fourth year of our program and there are several kids that have been here for all four years and then I have some young kids that are hungry and willing to learn and working hard and trying to improve every day,” Dolbare said. “I’m starting to see that and I’m starting to see the team come together a little bit, which is nice.”
