Selma is one of 33 towns across Alabama that will be on display every Saturday this month as part of the Alabama Tourism Department’s April Walking Tours.

The free, hour-long tours will begin at the Selma-Dallas County Public Library at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 5, 12, 19 and 26.

Ashley Mason, tourism director for the Selma-Dallas County Chamber of Commerce, said the walking tours will be a chance for Selma residents and visitors to all learn something new about the city.

“The whole purpose of this is to lead everybody through our downtown and be able to enlighten them on the history of the buildings and landmarks we have here,” Mason said. “I think it’s a great idea to get people out there and get them informed about all these great towns and cities we have across Alabama. It’s really a fun little history lesson.

One of the organizers for the statewide walking tours, Brian Jones with the Alabama Tourism Department, said the event has grown in popularity over the years.

“Alabama is the only state in the nation to hold statewide, simultaneous walking tours. These walking tours are a great way to get out and enjoy the spring weather and find out about the history of our state,” Jones said. “We have done more than 1,800 walking tours since the beginning of the program eleven years ago and they keep increasing in popularity every year.”
