Selma is on the map. Literally.
The National Geographic Society and the Alabama Tourism Department recently unveiled its new four state geotourism project. This project was created to showcase natural, cultural, and historic points of interest in the gulf coast states — Alabama, Florida, Mississippi, and Louisiana.
Of the 341 Alabama listings, more than 10 of them belong to Selma.
“This geotourism project was started over a year ago – long before I made Selma my home and I am thrilled that so many Selma locations were included,” Selma Tourism Director Ashley Mason said. “If you see Linda Vice, Patricia Butts, Sheryl Smedley, or Linda Derry, be sure to thank them for putting us on the map — literally.”
Selma’s sites are featured on the U.S. Gulf Coast States Geotourism interactive website at www.usgulfcoaststatesgeotourism.com and on their mobile app. Printed maps are also available through the website.
Some of the sites on the MapGuide include National Voting Rights Museum and Institute, Old Cahawba Archaeological Park, Old Depot Museum, Sturdivant Hall Museum, Vaughan-Smitherman Museum and Kenan’s Mill.
Nominations are open again for the MapGuide and the Selma Tourism office will be submitting more unique locations.
