You will routinely find an item listed in our daily community calendar promoting a meeting of what is known as the Diabetes Support Group.
During regular meetings, this group, headed up the by the Dallas County Extension Office, offers not only networking opportunities with those battling diabetes, or those who care for those with diabetes, but offers real-world tips and advice on how to better live with what is potentially a crippling disease.
Monday, this group again meets at the Dallas County Health Department and will begin a series of meetings focused on cooking good tasting and healthy meals that are diabetic friendly. This is just another example of what this group — and other programs throughout the region — is doing to help curb the overwhelming impact this disease has on this region.
But, this support group is just one part of an overall fight needed against this disease. It takes education at every level of schooling and life about the importance of healthy living, in an effort to break the chain of diabetes moving from one generation to the next.
We fully support and applaud every effort made to improve the health of the place we call home.
