Fallen soldiers will be honored as part of a Memorial Day ceremony Monday at Memorial Stadium.

Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3016 will host the ceremony, beginning at 11 a.m. until around noon.

Rod Stone, quartermaster for Post 3016, said the event will include speeches, posting of colors, taps, and presentation of flowers.

“VFW is the only group that has a nationwide required program, so we will do all of that,” Stone said.

Dallas County Sheriff Harris Huffman will be the event’s guest speaker.

“The biggest thing I’m looking forward to is seeing the veterans and families of fallen soldiers,” Huffman said. “I had a relative who died in WWII, so this day has a special meaning to me.”

Although Huffman said he never had the opportunity to serve, he said veterans and their families deserve to be honored.

“I feel for the veterans and families who have lost loved ones,” he said. “I’m looking forward to sharing a few words.”

Several groups will be in attendance, including the Elks Club and the American Legion.

Elton Reece, director of Selma recreation and a veteran himself, said the ceremony is getting bigger every year.

“It has really grown over the last 10 years,” Reece said. “It’s a big deal for a lot of people.”
