‘Selma’ to use city buildings

The city of Selma will have a few extra thousand dollars in bank accounts after its movie namesake wraps up filming.

During filming, the St. James Hotel will be packed with crew members from the movie, Selma Mayor George Evans said during Thursday’s city council work session. Some of the crew will begin arriving as early as June 15, while most others will begin their stay at the hotel closer to filming dates. — June 23 to 26.

The crew’s stay is estimated to bring in approximately $31,000 and will result in multiple renovations before filming begins, Evans said. The most pressing renovations include placing window air conditioning units in many of the hotel rooms and repairing or replacing a freezer in the St. James’ kitchen, Evans said.

“If they use the hotel, we have some real concerns about the AC and the freezer,” Evans said during the council’s meeting. “Even with that, we are going to profit from the standpoint that they will be paying us to use the hotel. I think we should move forward on getting the hotel ready as soon as possible.”

He said the repairs should cost about $9,000. The council didn’t discuss a funding method during Thursday’s work session, but Evans said he would present a recommendation at Tuesday’s council meeting.

But the St. James is only a part of the monetary equation. The movie crew will use several other city facilities, including the Walton Theater and Stripling Performing Arts Center, which will host a casting call on Tuesday at noon.

The casting call is open to anyone ages 17 to 70 who is eligible to work in the U.S., according to the casting announcement. The casting call is for 500 extras. If selected the extras would be required to work 12-14 hours in vintage wardrobe.

The city hadn’t originally planned to receive money from the movie’s use of city facilities, but Evans said the crew recently offered to pay for its use of facilities.

“We are still working on the numbers, but it’s going to be a significant amount,” he said.

Evans said the income from the movies use of facilities would likely be less than $100,000.

In other news from the meeting:

4 After annexing a portion of Medical Center Parkway into the city limits last meeting, city attorney Jimmy Nunn presented a petition for annexation of the Selma-Dallas County YMCA. The YMCA’s annexation will be up for its first reading Tuesday, meaning that the annexation couldn’t become final until the council’s second June meeting, unless rules are suspended.

City attorney Jimmy Nunn said the only remaining step is for the council to approve the petition.
