Annual Jazz on the Grazz event to focus on recycling

Selma’s third annual Jazz on the Grazz will have a green twist.
Besides food and music, this year’s event will also include a recycling competition that challenges attendees to showcase artistic talents by creating an item out of paper, plastic, glass and other recyclable materials. Contestants can enter creations in six categories — crafts, toys, furniture, clothes, arts and miscellaneous.
Ward 2 councilwoman Susan Keith said the contest is part of an effort to increase awareness about the value of recycling.
“There’s only so much earth, and it’s not going to expand to accommodate growing landfills,” Keith said. “Recycling in the city has actually taken off better than we anticipated.”
The contest rules allow participants to enter as many categories as he or she likes. Each contestant may only submit one item per category. Small cash prizes will be awarded for each age group. The overall winner will receive $100.
Keith said recycled art must be set up by 11 a.m. on Friday.
Jazz on the Grazz begins at noon Friday in Pheonix Park on Water Avenue. It ends at 10 p.m.
She said Jazz on the Grazz is an exciting event in its third year because of an increased amount of vendors over previous years.
“There are just so many reasons to be excited for this year’s event,” Keith said.
Jazz on the Grazz will also be a trial run of Selma’s entertainment district, which comprises Water Avenue from Arts Revive to the Old Depot Museum.
Entertainment districts allow patrons to consume alcohol within the district’s limits. Though, all alcoholic beverages must be purchased at licensed businesses in the entertainment districts, according to the ordinance.
The ordinance prohibits drinks in glass containers. It also prohibits patrons from leaving businesses in the district with more than two alcoholic drinks. Drinking publicly in the entertainment district is allowed between the hours of 4 p.m. and 2:30 a.m., according to the ordinance.
The Selma city council approved the entertainment district during its June 10 meeting.
During the meeting, city attorney Jimmy Nunn said the district would become official once the approved ordinance is published in the Times-Journal.
The ordinance published Wednesday.
During the June 10 city council meeting Ward 4 councilwoman Angela Benjamin said the district approval in time for Jazz on the Grazz would allow the council to find and fix problems for a future grand opening.
