Traffic signal cameras discussion planned

City officials are working out the final details on cameras at certain traffic signals in the city.
The notice of the ordinance has run, so residents will know what will happen soon.
The next big event is a meeting Nov. 10 with representatives from American Traffic Solutions, the mayor, Selma Police Chief William Riley and some others to iron out the final details, such as where to place the cameras, and when those cameras will be installed, said Jimmy Nunn, attorney for the city.
Representatives from American Traffic Solutions have recommended installing 10 cameras across the city in the beginning.
Basic initial costs to the city will be low. Those costs would include electricity for the cameras, a police officer to review the photographs and sign off on them and the cost of municipal court hearings to handle the proceedings. These costs could be added to the fine charged violators from running a traffic signal, but that is yet undetermined.
Earlier this year, experts with Public Strategies LLC of Montgomery conducted a study of 20 intersections picked by the Selma Police Department to determine the need for the cameras. For instance, at J.L. Chestnut Boulevard and Franklin Street the cameras were up for 11 hours and recorded 77 offenses.
At the time, Mayor George Evans said “You’ll be amazed at what’s going on in the city with those cameras.”
Public Strategies was sold to American Traffic Solutions shortly after the test.
