A biannual tradition is set to roll through the Old Cahawba Archaeological Park once again.

The park will host the Bring Your Own Bike tour from 10 a.m. to noon this Saturday.

People who attend the event will get a 3.3-mile tour of the park’s historic grounds, located at 9518 Cahaba Road in Orrville.

“Everybody’s got that old bike out in the garage, and they’ve heard of Cahawba but haven’t had the time to come out and visit, and this is a great way to cross two things off your list there,” said Johnathan Matthews, assistant site director at Cahawba. “Drag out the old bike and come learn about the history of Cahawba while getting some exercise.”

Matthews, who will be leading the tour, said the event will be full of stories and facts about the former town and the city of Alabama’s first state capital.

“It’s bicycling for two minutes and then I’ll talk for 10 minutes,” Matthews said. “The tour has always attracted a variety of people of all ages, which is important for a historic site. The park really lends itself to being explored by bicycle.”

Matthews, who has worked at the park for 11 years, said the bike tour is an easy ride for people of all ages.

“It’s not too strenuous, but I always tell people to bring a bottle of water,” Matthews said. “I’ve even had a group bring a picnic, and we all sat down in the cemetery for a small snack.”

This past spring, the park hosted a similar ride that attracted 22 riders, the largest crowd in the five years the ride has been held there.

If the event is rained out, Matthews said it would not be held until the next scheduled ride early next year.

“If it rains, we will have to cancel the event, but we already have the next one schedule for March 7, 2015,” Matthews said.
