A Selma business sustained an estimated $200,000 in damages during a burglary overnight Thursday.
The Moon of Selma convenience store, formerly known as United Stop & Shop, was broken into before 5 a.m. Friday. The store is located in the 400 block of Highway 80 East.
When officers arrived, they met with a store clerk who led investigators to a hole in the north-side wall of the business.
The suspects entered the store by knocking a hole through the cement block wall, according to Lt. Curtis Muhannad with Selma PD.
Once inside, they used some type of torch to open a safe, from which they stole an estimated $10,000.
The suspects then poured what is believed to be bleach through the entire business and ripped out electronic surveillance equipment, Muhannad said.
The theft and damage to the business totals an estimated $210,000, according to authorities.
The store’s rolling steel doors may have aided the perpetrators. While the front of the business is all glass, the store is secured at night with the metal doors.
“Nobody riding by would have seen anything, even if they had the lights on you wouldn’t know they were in the building,” Muhannad said.
The Selma Police Department is asking for any information the public may have about the crime.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Crime Stoppers at 1 (866) 422-7463 or the Secret Witness Line at (334) 874-2190. Calls can remain confidential and you may receive a cash reward for details leading to an arrest.
