Between robotics and aviation, there was a lot going on at Wallace Community College Selma the last two days.

The Selma Boosting Engineering Science and Technology’s competition was Thursday, as schools from around the area built robots and competed for a chance to move on to a regional contest at Auburn University Dec. 6-7.

Congratulations to Morgan Academy, who won the overall first place BEST Award, and Martin Middle School who earned first in the Robotics category of the competition.

Meanwhile, on Friday, WCCS held its third annual Aviation Day at Craig Field Airport.

At the event, youth were entertained by soaring airplanes overhead, and also had a chance to use a flight simulator, meet pilots and peek inside of an actual aircraft.

These events are worth supporting, as they express math, science and aviation to our children. Selma has a storied past linked to Craig Air Force Base, so it’s important to make sure our youth know of the city’s  past aviation prowess.

Any time our youth can get a leg up in science, math or a skill such as aviation, it gives them a chance to soar into a successful future.
