Many of our veterans still need our help

We hope everyone took the time Tuesday to thank one of our nation’s veterans to let them know how much we all appreciate their service to our country.

There were numerous celebrations all over Selma to salute our heroes, so that they don’t think their contributions have or will be forgotten.

Vaughan Place resident released red, white and blue ballons into the air Monday in honor of veterans.  The city of Selma held its annual Veterans Day program, which hundreds of people attended to thank our troops. It’s great to stand and applaud, or thank our men and women who served our country, but there’s also a lot of other ways to help veterans.

One of the top ways is to support the Wounded Warrior Project, which helps thousands of injured veterans returning from the battlefield.  The project serves those who have a physical or mental injury, illness or a wound co-incident to their military services on or after Sept. 11, 2001, and their families.

The easiest way to donate is by going to www.woundedwarriorproject.org.

The Disabled American Veterans is another way to help our nation’s heroes. The DAV provides free assistance to veterans and families in obtaining benefits and services earned through their service to the military, represent the interest of those that are disabled, their families, their widowed spouses and their orphans, as well as many other projects.

To learn more or to donate to the DAV, go to www.dav.org. We point these out the day after Veterans Day because the fight still continues for our veterans. Many of them are disabled or need help and we need to do our part. Just because Veterans Day is past for another 364 days, it doesn’t mean they should be pushed in the rear view mirror. We can’t thank our troops enough for what they do for us. We encourage everyone to find a way to give back and to really make a difference in their lives.
