The Selma City School Board of Education reelected Kirit Chapatwalla as its vice president.
Chapatwalla was chosen with a 2-1 vote over Udo Ufomadu, who was absent from Thursday’s regularly scheduled board meeting. Chapatwalla has served on the board for 12 years.
“I’m happy that they have faith in me,” Chapatwalla said after being voted vice president.
Board members Frank Chestnut Jr. and Brenda Obomanu voted in support of Chapatwalla. President Henry Hicks Sr. nominated Ufomadu.
After the results were announced, Hicks shared th reason behind his decision.
“I know we have our own reasons and things for what we do what we do, but I just felt that [Ufomadu] should have been the vice chair of this board,” Hicks said. “He’s never been able to serve in that capacity since we’ve been on this board.”
Afterward, Chestnut added his thoughts.
“I just want the record to reflect that I have a lot of confidence in Dr. Chapatwalla,” Chestnut said. “I’ve shared a lot of time with him up, and I think he’ll make a good vice president.”
Hicks also acknowledged Chapatwalla’s service to the board.
“Dr. Chapatwalla, thank you for the service that you have rendered,” Hicks said. “And we’ll continue to use you as the vice chair, because you have been dually elected. I pray that you will continue to work closely with me.”
