Organizers believe the Rainbow the Sky event, meant to honor those who have battled cancer, will be worth the wait.
The event, organized by Relay for Life Selma and Dallas County, was postponed from its original date of Nov. 18 because of inclement weather and will take place Tuesday at Riverfront Park at 6:30 p.m. on Water Avenue.
“I’m real excited about is, and I’m excited to know the weather is going to cooperate this time I think,” said Tina Yelverton, Relay for Life Selma and Dallas County leadership committee chairwoman.
The ten-day forecast shows great weather scheduled for Dec. 2, meaning conditions may be perfect for an event meant to honor so many. Lanterns will be lit and lifted into the sky in honor of those that have battled cancer.
“We also will be reading the names of the people that are being honored or remembered during the event, so it should be a real touching ceremony,” Yelverton said.
The lanterns are being sold for $20 apiece.
Yelverton said over half of the lanterns for sale have already been sold, with all proceeds going to the American Cancer Society.
Any extra lanterns will also be sold at the entrance to the Rainbow the Sky event.
“I think the turnout is going to be great,” Yelverton said.
