With Christmas only a couple of weeks away, people are beginning to do some last minute shopping as they check off their Christmas list.
Checking off their list again this year is the Selma Charity League. A group of around 30 young women participated in the annual fundraiser, donating gifts for over 35 angels from the Salvation Army’s Angel Tree on Tuesday.
“It’s just great to be able to give back to the community and have all of the girls participate in that,” said Christina Siddens, the Selma Charity League president. “It’s a good feeling to give back to the community and make sure that all of those little kids that maybe don’t have anything for Christmas, have a good Christmas now.”
The Charity League has been doing this annual fundraiser for many years and continues to work closely with the Salvation Army throughout the year.
“We support the Salvation Army as one of our regular charities,” Siddens said. “So we have a close relationship anyways.”
Siddens said the women enjoy working with the staff at the Salvation Army, and they look forward to giving back to the children of the community during the holidays.
“It’s really great for us to be able to get stuff for so many kids,” Siddens said. “I think it shows you that there are people who definitely have less than some of us do.”
Siddens said she hopes league members take away something from the experience and realize that their donations can help the community.
Donating the gifts is an annual event that the league does every year at their December meeting.
“We do an annual Christmas party for the charity league in place of our regular monthly meeting,” Siddens said. “We hand out the Salvation Army tree angels to the girls and everybody brings their gifts for the angels, and the Salvation Army comes and picks them up.”
The last day to drop off gifts at the Salvation Army for the Angel Tree is Friday, Dec. 12. They are asking anyone not able to buy a gift for a particular angel to make a monetary donation to go towards the remaining angels.
