Sales event should be the start

Saturday marked mission in action and the results — when everything is tallied — will hopefully match the effort put forth and the good thoughts, good intentions and good prayers offered up.
For weeks, the Selma-Dallas County Chamber of Commerce, its retail committee and a number of partner businesses have gone to organize Saturday’s “Green Saturday” sales event.
The motive behind such a program was to prove to area residents that the service and selection offered by area retailers, is plenty to fill out just about anyone’s Christmas shopping list.
For years, businesses — on their own — have worked to make Selma and Dallas County the starting point for holiday deal hunters and have had limited success. But together — and with the weight of the Chamber behind them — these retailers might have accomplished more in just one day than they could have ever hoped for individually.
The receipts may not be tallied for some time, but initial reports from retailers were positive and the foundation put down this year for “Green Saturday” could prove to be a successful starting point for similar events to happen for years to come.
For Selma and Dallas County to succeed, it will take each business — and each business organization — working together for the common good. The phrase “a rising tide lifts all boats” could not be more true.
Saturday was a refreshing beginning to the busy Christmas shopping season and it is our hope it proves to be the beginning to a very successful season for everyone and every business involved.
