One march is the way to go for Jubilee

It looks like Selma and those coming to the Queen City for next month’s Jubilee are all on the same page.
Civil rights organizations reached an agreement earlier this week to hold only one march to commemorate Bloody Sunday during the 50th anniversary Bridge Crossing Jubilee. The ceremony’s date, which has historically always been held on Sunday, was questioned by some when President Barack Obama announced plans to visit Selma Saturday, March 7 on the actual anniversary of Bloody Sunday.
Instead, Obama will speak Saturday and the march will take place Sunday, allowing visitors that come to town an opportunity to see both.
It’s been regrettable over the last few weeks as national media outlets reported about the perceived power struggle going on among organizations over the march. That’s not the picture anyone in Selma wants painted, because that’s not a true reflection of our beautiful city.
The announcement also clears up a lot of confusion. With the president arriving Saturday, many assumed there would be two marches. Leaders, such as Sen. Hank Sanders, said two marches would diminish the Sunday march.
Now that all of the debating is over and a decision has been reached, Selma and other voting rights movement leaders can greet the world together, as one united group.
