The Selma-Dallas County Library is offering a series of classes dedicated to those wanting to learn a few extra skills around the home.
Starting March 4, the library is teaming up with Dallas County Home Extension to host “Home Skills” classes teaching home enthusiasts how to decorate a cake, can and preserve jams and jellies and create a no sew pillow.
“Home Skills are classes designed to sort of simplify living at home,” said Becky Nichols, Selma-Dallas County Library director. “These are going to be three wonderful classes in which you’ll get a beginners view of each one of those areas and then armed with some library books of those skills.”
This is the third year the library had offered such classes, giving the community an opportunity to get crafty with house keeping.
“We’re excited because this offers us an opportunity to bring a different group of people hopefully into the library,” Nichols said.
Nichols said events like this are great for the community to get together and fellowship, but to also learn something that they can take away from the experience and put to good use later on.
“One of the great ways to [bring people together] is to have a skill or a class of something that brings [people] together with a common belief,” Nichols said. “It makes us excited when we can bring folks together that maybe didn’t have a chance to know each other before.”
On March 4, Janie Hall from the Dallas County Home Extension will teach a class on how to decorate cakes. The fee for this class is $5, but each participant will decorate and take a cake home with them. Nichols said that anyone wanting to just watch is welcome to come at no charge.
The next class will be March 11 and Callie Nelson from the Extension will focus on home canning and preserving jams and jellies. This class is free of charge.
The last class in the series is no sew pillows. Nelson will be teaching participants how to create pillows without the hassle of sewing. Again there is no fee to partake in the class.
