Selma native and Alabama State University women’s basketball player Jasmine Peeples has been named the 2014-2015 Southwestern Athletic Conference’s defensive player of the year.
Peeples leads the SWAC in rebounds (285) and blocked shots (86) and ranks 15th in the nation in blocked shots per game (3.1).
She was also named to the All-SWAC First Team.
Peeples went to Selma High School and as a junior at Alabama State and has already graduated with a degree in communications and a minor in criminal justice.
“I just want to be a good example on and off the floor,” Peeples said in a previous interview with the Times-Journal.
“Whether it be academics or making sure I’m putting in time and work to make sure I get good grades or on the floor, making sure I’m respecting the coaches and putting forth effort and not just going through the motions at practice.”
Peeples had 11 double-doubles this season, highlighted by a 22 point and 21 rebound performance against Grambling State in January. Peeples averaged 10.9 points and 10 rebounds per game this year for the Hornets.
