Pilgrimage set to transform Selma

Selma will bounce back in time this weekend as the annual pilgrimage takes place. This year’s pilgrimage will be held Friday and Saturday and will give visitors a look at the Queen City of the Black Belt in the 19th and 20th centuries.

Eight churches are included in this year’s pilgrimage, as well as 10 houses or museums.

It’s always a fun weekend for those that attend and organizers do a good job of making it feel as realistic as possible. Girls wear antebellum dresses to set the mood and history is all over the place, even more than usual.

Tickets can be purchased at the Vaughan Smitherman Museum and range from $5 to $50. An all-inclusive ticket, which includes access to all of the activities going on, is $50. It is free to see the eight churches and it only cost $5 to see each of the museums and Keenan’s Mill.

For more information on the pilgrimage, call 412-8550. It’s our hope that those in Selma and Dallas County will take some time this weekend and see Selma transformed into a different time period.
