Storms don’t stop track meet at Memorial Stadium

Even rain couldn’t slow runners Monday at Memorial Stadium, where six schools participated in a final warm-up for the looming Alabama Independent School Association championships later this month.
Rainstorms made conditions slippery but none of the events were stopped at any point due to the weather. Before the storms arrived, Morgan Academy’s Kendall Veach broke her own state record in the shot put with a throw of 33 feet and 8 3/4 inches.
Senators’ head coach Rob Robinson said due to softball, Veach hasn’t practiced with the track team this year.
“I don’t know how much she’s practiced but apparently either she doesn’t need practice or she has been practicing a lot more than I thought,” Robinson said with a laugh.
Veach also finished second in the discus throw. Robinson said he’s never had an athlete that had the ability to learn on the fly like she has.
“Last year I asked if she wanted to try [the shot put,] and we went out behind the school one day. She had probably never even seen a shot before,” Robinson said.
“The first time she picked one up she didn’t know how to hold it or anything. Within five minutes she was beating the previous year’s winning distance.”
Veach headlined the Senators’ girls third-place team finish, although all results were unofficial as of Monday night.
Jaycee Sanders also finished first in the 3200-meter race and the team of Emily Katelyn Edwards, Jane Anne Stewart, Miranda Johnson and Peyton Ellen Granthum came in second in the 400 meter relay.
The team of Anna Laken Tidmore, Carolina Colvin, Frances Henry and Natalie Henry finished third in the 3200-meter relay. The Morgan Academy girls also finished third in the 4×400 meter relay.
The unofficial girls standings had Tuscaloosa edging out defending champion Lee-Scott 86 to 80. Morgan was third with 76 points.
Escambia led the unofficial boys standings with 149 points, followed by Lee-Scott and Kingwood Christian. Morgan finished sixth with 3 points.
“Before today I thought it was Lee-Scott and everybody else,” Robinson said. “Tuscaloosa and Escambia being there, that changed everything. I didn’t know how strong Tuscaloosa was, but they are definitely strong.”
The Senators’ boys team of Chris Wilson, John Tyler Fisher, Jack Stewart and Joseph Lolley finished fourth in the 3200 meter relay. Sam Brackin also won his heat in the 200-meter dash.
“These early track meets is a lot of positioning by the schools,” Robinson said. “Sometimes they have a trick up their sleeve — holding somebody back or putting somebody into a relay that hadn’t been in there before. You don’t know exactly what everybody has but you get a pretty good idea.”
Rain may be the biggest difference in Monday’s meet and the state competition, which will be held April 15-16 at Memorial Stadium. Although only one runner fell victim to the rain — a Lee-Scott athlete with a large lead in a relay race, who got up and still won — it did dampen the track and create slippery conditions.
Robinson said they were lucky the rain came through after all of the field events were completed.
“Other than field events we’ve run in pouring down rainstorms before,” Robinson said. “As long as it’s not lightning and not dangerous we will run wet or dry.”
Monday was Morgan’s final track and field event before the state competition.
