Mangum set to start job as superintendent

Selma will have a new school superintendent on Monday.
That doesn’t sound all that extraordinary, but it’s a noteworthy moment for a school system that has been under some dark clouds the past year.
More than a year after the Alabama Department of Education took over control of the system, we now find ourselves at perhaps the most pivotal moment since that announcement.
On Monday, Angela Mangum will start her tenure as Selma City Schools Superintendent. She has a job that few would envy but also one that is also vitally important to the community and its future.
We wish Mangum success and hope all Selma residents will welcome her and help anyway they can. A strong public school system affects industry recruitment, quality of life and other factors that impact all of us.
Mangum currently holds two positions with the state department of education.
She is coordinator of LEAD Alabama and the coordinator of the Principal Candidate Semester Residency. She has held both positions since 2006.
In the past, she was a principal in Montgomery Public Schools, an adjunct professor at Alabama State University and chief academic officer for both the Montgomery Public School System and the Alabama State Department of Education.
We have high hopes for Mangum. As acting superintendent Larry DiChiara said Tuesday, “We hope she can hit the ground running. We’re very excited to have such a quality young lady with such high standards.”
Selma has made undeniable improvements since the state takeover. Mangum’s start date signals that state intervention will end one day, as it should.
However, the state department needs to be deliberate in leaving and make sure Mangum has all the information and resources she needs to be successful.
