Wallace Community College continued retooling its men’s basketball team with the signing of four more players Wednesday.

Patriots coach Ronald Lane added forward Erik Chavers and forward/guard Daniel Adams, both of Midfield, near Birmingham; point guard Charles Knight of St. Jude in Montgomery; and guard/forward Adam Middleton of Fairburn High School, near Atlanta.

The four players bring to six the number of Wallace signees after Camden’s Lavaughan Nicholson and Deidrick Irby inked with the Patriots last month.

Lane said Tuesday’s four signees bring him closer to putting his stamp on the team.

“We had six sophomores who graduated this year,” said Lane, whose 2009 squad went 13-20 and won one game in the ACCC playoffs. “I just came in as head coach last May, and I really didn’t have a chance to recruit.

“When we started playing last season, I realized we didn’t have a true point guard, and we lost eight games by two points.”

St. Jude coach Earl Taylor, who attended the signing, said the 5-foot-9 Knight is a true point guard.

“He’s a quiet leader,” Taylor said. “He led the team in assists and steals, was the second-leading scorer. And he played on two state championship teams.”

Knight averaged 26 points and five assists per game.

Chavers and Adams were members of a 2009 squad that went 28-7. Chavers (6-5) had 10 points and eight rebounds per game, while Adams averaged 22 points, 12 rebounds and eight steals.

Middleton, a 6-5 shooting guard, collected 17 points, eight rebounds and two steals per game.

Chavers and Adams said they were excited about playing at Wallace under Lane, who emphasizes defense with his run-and-gun offense.

“If we can be better, we can make the team better,” Adams said. “I like the wide-open offense because that’s how you get the most points.”

Chavers said the scoring is good, “but coach said as long as we play defense.”

Lane said the incoming players give him the chance to challenge his squad.

“This will be a completely new ball team,” he said. “We’ll have five positions that will be wide open.”
