Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3016 will host a Memorial Day ceremony honoring veterans who have made the ultimate sacrifice at Bloch Park on Monday at 11 a.m.
Dallas County Probate Judge Kim Ballard will be the guest speaker and several different clubs and organizations from around the city will be called upon to lay out wreaths at the memorial.
“I hope people take away a sense of unity of our community, and they come together while honoring these people,” post commander Dennis Doherty said. “Every year this event has grown bigger and bigger. It is really turning into something that people are looking forward to every year.”
Doherty said the event will give everyone an opportunity to come together as one group.
“I think it is very important, especially in the town of Selma and the separations that we have with everybody and everything right now,” Doherty said.
There will be another memorial service Monday in front of City Hall at 2:30 p.m. that will take part in The National Moment of Remembrance Act.
The Selma Fire and Police Departments and the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office will sound their sirens. There will also be a moment of silence to remember fallen soldiers that gave their lives in the line of duty at 2:30 p.m.
“I think it means a lot to the families,” said event planner Kay Alsobrook.
