The Christmas season officially arrived at Selma City Hall Saturday night with the lighting of the Christmas tree.

Music and wishes for a merry Christmas welcomed the crowd, along with juice and cookies following the ceremony.

Mistress of ceremony Rogan Cowart said she was thrilled to be a part of this year’s celebration.

“It is so much of a joy to be a part of Christmas in Selma, particularly the lighting of the Christmas tree and what it symbolizes,” she said. “We in Selma are one big happy family.”

Performances by Lattesha Woods and the Selma High School concert band had everyone in the Christmas spirit by the time Selma Mayor George Evans flipped the switch on the tree. Evans said it had been a busy day in town, which made him appreciate Saturday night’s crowd even more.

“There are a lot of things going on today and I just want to thank everyone for handling everything,” he said.

“I want to thank everybody that has been a part of this year’s Christmas tree lighting. I hope and trust that everyone will have a most blessed Christmas.”

Sheryl Smedley and Candice Johnson also presented the winners of the window decoration contest. Carter’s Drug Store took first place, Custom Rim and Tire took second and Pine Belt Wireless Radio Shack took third. Smedley said she appreciated everyone’s participation.

“I just want to wish everyone a merry Christmas and, yes, it’s a wonderful life here today,” she said.

Councilman Corey Bowie also reminded everyone to remember why we celebrate.

“In Selma we have so much to be blessed and thankful for,” he said. “I hope we all remember the reason for the season. Christ was born.”
