Unity event draws hundreds to Phoenix Park

The Unity in the Community Praise and Worship event Saturday was a big success with hundreds in attendance.
Phoenix Park on Water Avenue was full of song, dance, food and fun as people enjoyed a warm day outside with other members of the community.
The occasion is all about the community, bringing people from all over Selma and Dallas County together to enjoy an afternoon with old friends and new ones. We think it’s wonderful when there are events like Unity in the Community to get people outside and enjoying each other’s company.
In its fourth year, the event grew larger, as Ward 5 Councilman Samuel Randolph said it does each year.
Not only was it a chance to try out some food from different restaurants in town, but some lucky attendees were chosen to have their utility bills paid. With the summer heat in full force, utility bills can be pretty expensive, so having it paid for is especially nice for those who won.
Valerie Wagner was the first one to have her utility bill paid for, and she said she was completely shocked and extremely thankful that her name was called. Having her bill paid for was exciting for her, but she said that bringing people together was what the event was all about.
“It means a lot to me,” Wagner said. “I think Selma is still divided, and this brings everybody together.”
We hope to see more events like this that will bring people from all walks of life together to give them the opportunity to branch out and meet people they may not normally have the chance to meet.
