One of the biggest perks of winning a championship is the arrival of state championship rings to remember that accomplishment forever.
The Keith High School girls’ basketball team will receive its bling for winning the 2014 1A state championship at Wallace Community College Selma’s cafeteria Sunday at 3 p.m.
“It’s going to be exciting,” said Keith head coach Cecil Williams. “It’s going to top it off and be an award for everything. They have been looking forward to (the rings) for I don’t know how long. They’ve been calling me all day and all night. This will put the icing on the cake for them.”
The Bears dominated Spring Garden 38-25 on Feb. 27 to win the championship, which was the third girls title in school history. Keith finished the 2014-2015 season with a 28-5 record.
Williams said he is picking up the rings Saturday morning, but he said he’s going to keep them hidden until Sunday.
“The players don’t know where the rings are so they can’t get to them until Sunday,” Williams said.
“If they knew where they were I know they would probably go and get them.”
The rings will say “Keith” in capital blue letters on the top with diamonds surrounding the lettering.
Chrome letters reading “Lady Bears” and “state champions” are on each side of the front of the ring.
One side of the ring will include the high school’s abbreviation and the 1A banner. The ring’s other side will list the player’s last name and number and position.
