The Ancient Africa, Enslavement and Civil War Museum will have a Juneteenth celebration on June 26.

The museum usually holds the celebration on June 19, the day that has been known as African American Emancipation Day.

However, this year museum director Yomi Goodall will be traveling to Galveston, Texas, to participate in commemorations there. Galveston was where Union soldiers landed with news the war had ended and slaves were free.

Although the celebration has been pushed back a week, the events and activities are still on.

Free tours will be given the whole day at the museum during operating hours. Goodall said participants will leave with plenty of history and knowledge.

“They’ll learn the history of Juneteenth,” she said. “We do it as a reenactment. We also hand out a lot of literature and information about Juneteenth.”

History will be the word of the day at the celebration. She said she is prepared to provide attendees with information about the commemoration and how its evolved over the years.

“We look at Juneteenth as our first freedom day because a lot of our ancestors who were slaves were free that day,” Goodall said. “This is celebrating the ending of the horrible history of our people 400 years here as enslaved people.”

Goodall said it’s important for everyone to celebrate the history of Juneteenth, no matter race, for the day marks the end of slavery in America and freedom for everyone.

“It is not a freedom day celebration for African Americans any longer,” she said. “It’s a freedom day for America. It made us a more perfect union when the lives of the enslaved people were freed. People of all nationalities celebrate Juneteenth now.”

The celebration will be held at the Ancient Africa, Enslavement and Civil War Museum, during its operating hours from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.

An evening celebration will also be held at the museum from 5 to 7 p.m.
