Area resident Jake Peavy just can’t catch a break.
Peavy started only his second game in 2 ½ months Wednesday and gave up only one earned run in seven innings, but it wasn’t enough. Peavy and the Giants fell 4-1 to the New York Mets, who saw starting pitcher Jacob DeGrom throw eight scoreless innings.
In the loss, there were positive signs for Peavy, who missed a large chunk of the first half of the season due to a strained back.
He gave up just six hits and two runs, but still fell to 0-4 on the season.
“What a great effort he gave us,” Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. “We’ve got to find a way to get some runs. This offense is too good.”
Instead it was DeGrom who got the run support he needed.
DeGrom allowed two hits over eight scoreless innings and Eric Campbell hit a two-run homer to lead the Mets, who won consecutive road series for the first time this season.
“I felt good warming up, and I felt good in the first inning,” DeGrom said.
“I just stayed with my mechanics and tried to put up zeroes to give us a chance to win.”
DeGrom also contributed with his bat, successfully delivering a hit-and-run single that helped produce the Mets second run.
Juan Lagares also drove in a run for the Mets, who took advantage of an error by All-Star shortstop Brandon Crawford to break a 0-0 tie in the sixth.
