Tourism brings back museum tour

This year has been a year of milestones for the Queen City and tourism has been at an all-time high.
Selma and Dallas County Tourism hopes to build on that momentum with a two-day museum tour Aug. 7-8.
The tour started last summer and the 2015 version will be expanded.
“Last year whenever I was looking at the museums, I just wanted to bring awareness because we do have more than one or two museums,” said Ashley Mason, tourism director.
Although Mason believes that the chamber has done something similar in the past, she decided last year to start the tour again.
“We did it last year in July, and it was extremely hot, so that’s why we decided to push it back a little bit,” Mason said. “It was a success last year. We had almost 100 people for a first time event.”
Last year’s tour consisted of seven sites, including Old Cahawba Archaeological Park, the Old Depot Museum, Selma Interpretive Center, Vaughan-Smitherman Museum, the Ancient Africa, Enslavement and Civil War Museum, National Voting Rights Museum and Institute and Sturdivant Hall Museum.
In addition to the seven from last year, the tour will also include the Jackson House Historic Site, JC Bates Children’s Educational Museum and the Rosa Young Museum.
“We’ve added a few more sites this year,” Mason said. “We’re still just trying to bring awareness to all of the sites that we have to see.”
The tour, nicknamed 10 for 10, will give people an opportunity to visit 10 museums in Dallas County for $10.
“We wanted to offer a low price so that it would encourage [everyone] to go out and see the museums,” Mason said. “We just met with all of the museums, and talked about it and we’re were like, ‘Well, let’s do it for a dollar apiece.’”
Mason said one of her favorite moments from last year was hearing people talk about how much they enjoyed the experience.
“I know there’s a lot of people that have lived in Selma their entire lives, and they’ve never been to any of the museums. It kind of gave them more of an appreciation for living in Selma,” Mason said. “For tourists, they’re constantly looking for things to do, so I think it’s good to make them aware of the fact that we do have plenty of sites for them to explore.”
Tickets for the tours go on sale July 22 through Aug. 6 at the Selma-Dallas County Centre for Commerce, located at 912 Selma Ave.
Visitors can visit one or all of the sites, but tickets are still $10.
Those that tour all 10 sites during the two-day event will be entered to win a gift basket full of various items made in Selma and unique items from each of the museums.
The drawing for the basket will be Aug. 8 at 4 p.m. at the Old Depot Museum.
