Keep It Clean gaining steam

We’ve written extensively about the work Keep It Clean Selma is doing this summer, not only on the streets of the Queen City, but also on its attitudes.

The group continued its efforts Saturday with its third meeting day of the summer. About 40 people participated in the clean up, which took place along Tremont Street, J.L. Chestnut Jr. Boulevard and surrounding areas.

Hopefully the group is gathering momentum.

No matter how large or small, cities run best when citizens get involved. The people involved in this movement care enough about the place they live to spend off days on the side of the road picking up other people’s trash.

They saw a problem and are doing their best to help be the solution.

It’s human nature to complain about problems. No matter what age we are, we all do it. We ask others — why isn’t that fixed or why is that trash all over the road? Most of the time we want to blame someone and bicker about it until something is done.

The people involved in Keep It Clean Selma are answering those questions by rolling up their sleeves and getting to work.

We should all keep in mind the hard work they are doing the next time we decide to turn to social media to air our complaints or get upset with city officials. Instead, maybe we should see if we could fix the problem ourselves.

Imagine what Selma would look like if we could all use those principals.

Keep It Clean meets every second Saturday of the month. A fourth day is planned Aug. 8 at Houston Park Church of Christ on Crescent Hill Road at 8:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. We encourage any citizens interested in helping out to call 267-9053 for more information.
