Smith was arrested around 9 p.m. Tuesday night on the 800 block of Keelser Drive. The Selma Police Department had help from the Dallas County Sheriff’s Department and the Fourth Judicial Drug Task Force because he was out of their jurisdiction.

Smith is just one of the suspects that held 34-year-old Selma man at gunpoint and brutally assaulted him.

According to Sgt. Evelyn Ghant with the SPD, the 34-year-old victim and his friend were leaving a nightclub on Selma Avenue early Sunday morning around 1 a.m. As he was backing out of his parking spot, he hit a gray Mercury Grand Marquis, which was occupied by Smith and several other men.

When the victim and his friend got out to ask them about calling the police to file a report, they got out and pointed shotguns at the 34-year-old’s head.

The other men then brutally assaulted the 34-year-old, stomping him to the ground. They continued to stomp his head, face and stomach, leaving him with severe cuts and bruises.

The group of men then robbed the victim and his friend, taking $200 in cash, their wallets and a cell phone.

The victim was taken to the emergency room at Vaughan Regional Medical Center and later transported to a Birmingham hospital for further treatment. He was released Tuesday.

Smith could face 10 years to life in jail and up to $60,000 in fines if convicted. The case is still under investigation and more arrests are expected.

The Selma Police Department is asking anyone with information regarding either incident to call Crime Stoppers at 874-2588 or 1-866-442-7463. Phone calls will be kept confidential and a cash reward could be available for information that leads to an arrest.
