There might be snow in the air today, but according to the National Weather Service we will not see it on the ground.

A wintry mix could bring precipitation between noon and 6 p.m. today, but meteorologist Kevin Laws said conditions do not favor accumulation.

“It really doesn’t look that appealing as far as snowfall,” he said. “I wouldn’t be concerned about accumulation in that area.”

Warming temperatures, Laws said, will make it difficult for snow to stick, should flurries appear.

“The high is expected to be around 44 in Selma Wednesday,” he said. “It will be mostly cloudy and the best chance to see flurries will be in that window from noon to 6 p.m. But the temperatures will not be close to freezing, so I don’t see there being any problems.”

The peak time for flurries in the six-hour window is between noon and 1 p.m., Laws said. After that period of time the odds of snow decrease rapidly.

Because the temperatures are expected to be in the 40s, Laws also said conditions should remain safe for motorists.

“There shouldn’t be any problems on the highways,” he said. “Maybe a little moisture, but there shouldn’t be any icy conditions.”

Alabama Department of Public Safety Public Information Specialist Robyn Litchfield also said the roadways should remain safe, but said motorists should proceed with caution.

“At this point we don’t expect hazardous road conditions,” she said. “But anytime you are in a situation where there could be snow or moisture on the road we encourage drivers to be cautious.”
