Selma and Dallas County Tourism is holding a 10 for $10 museum tour Friday and Saturday, encouraging the community to get out and see what the Queen City has to offer.

This is the second year of the tour, which started out as the “7 for $7” museum tour.

Ashley Mason, tourism director, said she is happy that the day has finally arrived, and she is looking forward to touring the museums herself.

“I’m really excited and I [hope] that we’ll have a great turnout,” Mason said. “I think we’ve got a good response so far.”

Mason said there’s no better way to learn about Selma and Dallas County history than to see the museums that hold it.

“I think it’s incredibly important [to learn about the past] because how can you have pride in your city if you don’t know anything about it? And I think by touring these museums, they’ll learn about Selma’s history and seeing the great attractions we have here,” Mason said. “It’s good timing I think because it’s August, and everybody is either just getting back into school or about to start school. I think it’s a good event to go to around that time because you’re learning about Selma’s history.”

The tour will include Old Cahawba Archaeological Park, the Old Depot Museum, Selma Interpretive Center, Vaughan-Smitherman Museum, the Ancient Africa, Enslavement and Civil War Museum, the National Voting Rights Museum and Institute, Sturdivant Hall, the Jackson Home Historic Site, J.C. Bates Children’s Educational Museum and the Rosa Young Museum.

Mason said all sites will open at 9 a.m. Friday, except Sturdivant which will open at 10 a.m.

“Once they get to any of the museums that they choose, they’ll go in and purchase their ticket and they’ll be given a passport. The passport will have each of the sites listed on it and the addresses and the times that they’re open,” Mason said. “They’ll get it stamped at each site that they tour. Then if they tour all 10 sites then they’ll turn in their passport and be entered into a drawing to win a gift basket.”

Those that tour all 10 sites during the two-day event will be entered to win a gift basket full of various items made in Selma and unique items from each of the museums.

The drawing for the basket will be Aug. 8 at 4 p.m. at the Old Depot Museum.

“It’s a bargain. I think it’s about $50 [combined] to tour each of these museums separately and to be able to tour all of them for $10 — I mean that’s a steal,” Mason said. “I think it’s a really great opportunity for people that may have a fixed income or don’t want to spend a lot of money. They can come to these museums this weekend and see how great they are and share their experience with their friends and family.”
