There is plenty going on in Selma

Anyone who says “there is nothing to do in Selma” right now is either living in a cave, or loves being bored.
Over the next week there will be a packed schedule of holiday activity with events that should appeal to any taste.
For starters, tonight marks the second night of the Sturdivant Hall open house holiday tours. This event allows participants to strike out on their own and take a step back in time.
For those who would like to combine an activity with holiday shopping, a trip downtown is just what the doctor ordered. Almost any gift a person could want is in stock from Selma merchants. The Holiday Festival in the Larry Striplin Performing Arts Center is also a great opportunity to support local craftsmen and find unique gifts.
While shopping, I would also encourage everyone to take the time to check out the holiday decorations downtown. This year’s displays are second to none and required a great deal of effort. When the lights go down, downtown Selma is converted into a beautiful winter wonderland.
Also, there is a number of Christmas festivals and events remaining on the local calendar.
The Minter Millennium Parade will take place Saturday morning from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. This celebration will feature music, decorations, car shows and plenty of entertainment.
And speaking of entertainment, the Southside High School choir will also hold a special performance Sunday night at 6 p.m. at Ellwood Christian Church.
There are lots of other festivals and holiday performances out there as well.
If you would rather do something a little more hands-on for the holidays, there is also a packed agenda. Most local churches have some form of holiday charity and can always use an extra set of hands in collecting donations or making deliveries.
The same is true for other nonprofits. There are usually too many gifts to deliver in just one day and any help is appreciated.
The next time you find yourself with nothing to do, just look out the window. Odds are you’ll find something that appeals to you.
