Turk Pettit passed for 163 yards and four touchdowns and rushed for another 88 yards to lead the Lee Scott Academy Warriors to a 44-14 win over the Morgan Academy Senators.
Lee Scott (2-0, 1-0 Class AAA Region 1), struck quickly on the second play of the game when Pettit ran 65 yards through the Morgan defense setting the Warriors up on the Morgan 10-yard line. Pettit ran it in two plays later for the touchdown.
Jake Jenkins added the PAT giving the Warriors a 7-0 lead with barely two minutes gone in the game.
The Warriors scored again on their next possession, marching down the field in a 9-play, 73-yard drive capped by a 3-yard run by senior running back Mitchell Lewis, who tallied 115 yards rushing on the night. Jenkins again added the PAT for a 14-0 lead. The Warriors added another touchdown on a 37-yard touchdown pass from Pettit to Ben Ruffin, and another TD with 5:50 to play in the half on a 21-yard run by Justin Buchta.
The Senators (0-2, 0-1 Class AAA Region 2) put some points on the board before the half when senior quarterback Harrison Adams dropped a perfectly thrown pass into the hands of Jackson Henderson for a 58-yard touchdown. JR Wood added the PAT to cut the lead going into the half.
“We came out of the box well, they bounced right back and that’s a credit to them,” said Warriors’ head coach Robert Maddox. “They came out the second half with great enthusiasm, but luckily we were able to survive the onslaught coming after us.”
Morgan struck quickly on its first possession of the third quarter when Adams guided the Senators on a 6-play, 40-yard drive, hooking up with Henderson from 5-yards out for the touchdown. Wood again added the PAT pulling the Senators to within two touchdowns, 28-14.
It would be as close as they would get, though, as the Warriors added a safety on an intentional grounding call and two more touchdowns, both on pass plays from Pettit to Ruffin.
“I thought we played well midway through the second quarter to midway through the third quarter,” said Senators’ head coach Jake Wingo. “I thought we played lights out, played defense, scored two touchdowns and played disciplined football. But we started kind of flat and got down 21-0 and by then it’s hard to come back from a deficit like that”
Jack Stewart led Morgan’s defensive effort tallying seven tackles with Stuart Harrison adding five tackles and Lang Evans, Wood, and Davis Campbell each adding four tackles. Campbell also recovered a fumble.
Both teams have key region games Friday as the Senators travel to Troy to take on Pike, while the Warriors entertain Bessemer.
