Wallace Community College Selma plans to support Breast Cancer Awareness Month in color this year.
Wallace is hosting a 5K Color Run/1 mile Color Walk on its campus Saturday from 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. The 5K is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. and the 1 mile Color Walk will begin at 8:30 a.m.
Wallace has never held a Color Run, but faculty members Ebony Rose and Shuntelra Logan thought it would be a great idea to hold a Color Run to go with its past theme of “paint the town pink.”
“We’ve had a lot of interest in doing a Color Run,” Rose said. “ Our students are always asking about events that we could do on campus as well as community-oriented, so we thought it would be a good idea this year.”
Rose said she expects more than 100 people to come out and show their support.
“I have a lot of family and friends that have been affected by this disease and it’s not just something that I hold near and dear to my heart, but it’s a community event,” Rose said.
“It has stripped our community of our loved ones, people who mean the most to us and we just want to make sure that everyone understands the severity of this disease and are aware of some of the things that we can do to try to help prevent it.”
Like Rose as well as so many others, Logan has a personal connection to the cause.
“I also have been affected with this disease in my family, but also we have a lot of co-workers and a lot of students that have also been affected by breast cancer disease,” Logan said.
Most Breast Cancer Awareness Month events encourage people to wear pink, but Saturday’s Color Run is different.
“We’re encouraging everyone to wear white so the pink will actually show up,” Rose said. “We want the color pink to go with the cause and if you wear pink on pink, it might not show up as much.”
To guarantee a t-shirt, Rose encourages people to pre-register at the cashier’s office at Wallace. Registration is also open the day of the race and check-in is at 7:20 a.m.
Registration is $25 and $10 for high school and college students with a student ID. Kids 12 and under can register for free.
“We just want to celebrate and take this time out not only to bring awareness but also to celebrate the survivors and celebrate the ones who did not survive this battle,” Logan said.
